Henry de Waroquier (1881-1970) est un artiste français polyvalent, issu d’une famille aristocratique d’artistes. Indépendant et curieux, il refuse les voies classiques, se forme aux Arts décoratifs et développe très tôt un style personnel aux côtés de Modigliani. Il connaît un succès rapide avec ses paysages, notamment ceux de Venise, aux tonalités apaisantes. En parallèle, il explore une œuvre plus sombre et expressive, marquée par l’angoisse et la déformation des figures humaines, comme dans La Tragédie (1937) ou Espagne (1938), souvent comparée à Guernica. Toujours en quête d’innovation, il expérimente aussi des formes hybrides mêlant sculpture et photographie, créant des œuvres éphémères.
