Jean-Gabriel Domergue (1889-1962) est un peintre et graveur français, célèbre pour ses portraits de femmes élégantes — ou plutôt pour la figure féminine idéale qu’il développe au fil du temps, immédiatement reconnaissable et marquée par l’esthétique Art déco. Petit-cousin de Toulouse-Lautrec, il étudie aux Beaux-Arts de Paris et expose dès 1906 au Salon des Artistes Français, où il obtient plusieurs distinctions, dont le deuxième grand prix de Rome en 1913. En 1939, Domergue crée l’affiche devenue emblématique du premier Festival de Cannes, finalement annulé, représentant une femme applaudissant aux côtés d’un homme en habit. A distant cousin of Toulouse-Lautrec, he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and began exhibiting at the Salon des Artistes Français as early as 1906, where he received several honours, including the second Grand Prix de Rome in 1913. In 1939, Domergue designed the now-iconic poster for the inaugural Cannes Film Festival - ultimately cancelled - which depicted a woman applauding beside a man in evening dress. Elected to the Institut de France in 1950, Domergue later served as curator of the Musée Jacquemart-André, where he oversaw a number of major exhibitions.
