Signed bottom left. Belonged to Jeanne Schwarz (1887-1970) and Solange Schwarz (1910-2000) who were principal ballet dancers at the Paris Opera. Nathalie Gontcharova was born Russian and then emigrated to Paris with her husband Larionov . Both were key founders of the Rayonism art movement . She (as well as her husband) designed many costumes for Serge Diaghileff Russian Ballet in the 1920's. She was one of the main artist of the Russian and French Avant-Gardes.

    Beautiful reclining female nude by Mikao Kono (1900-1979). Oil on paper pasted on canvas. Signed and dated XXXIII (33) in red bottom left. Dimension: 46 x 38cm (without frame), 52 x 44cm (with frame) Miçao Kono was a Japanese artist who came to Paris in the early 1920s. He painted in oils and watercolors, and also did a number of etchings. Micao Kono became famous with his nude portraits combining traditional Japanese style with the modernity of the Art Deco. His paintings were very popular in the Art Deco interiors. They were romantic and sensuous; his work is close to his Japanese fellow countryman Foujita. Kono’s technique was unusual as he used heavy white over which her painted his subject in pastel colors. Either by design or by the passage of time the white paint always shows signs of cracking.

    Bench by Raymond Subes (1891-1970) from the years 1940s-1950s The legs are made of mahogany with lateral X shape gilt bronze design, it is covered with red-brown saddle-stitched leather. It is fully restored (new leather and varnish) and is in perfect condition. This bench was created by R Subes for the Banque de France (French State Bank). The gallery has in stock another identical item. Raymond Subes is one of the major designers of the 1920s to the 1940. He collaborated with many famous architects and artists of his time e.g. steamers decoration and major exhibitions such as the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs in 1925 which set the Art Deco style on the world stage and the Exposition Universelle de Paris in 1937. His iron work made him famous and he is with Poillerat and Arbus one of the greatest designers of the 1940s style. In 1958 he was elected a member of the French Académie des Beaux-arts.

    This exceptional mask belongs to the sought after Dan-Guéré mask family (Africa - Côte d'Ivoire/Ivory Coast). It is made from wood with a nice black patina, pigments and comes with a beautiful set of small bronze bells and hair made of vegetable fibers. It dates from the first half of the 20th century. H : 9.65 in; W : 8.27 in ; D : 3.94 in.

    Porte DOGON Composée de deux panneaux de bois sculptés. Montée sur socle de présentation en acier. Le décor est composé de trois parties : en haut - un groupe de danseurs portant les masques de cérémonie, au milieu - un groupe de personnages debout, en bas - trois silhouettes stylisées et un animal domestique.  Les Dogons sont une des plus anciennes populations d'Afrique, installée dans la région de Bandiagara (près de Mopti au Mali). Ils construisent leurs villages au pied de falaise et enterrent leurs morts dans des grottes en surplomb. Leur culture et leur cosmogonie sont parmi les plus riches d'Afrique et ont été étudiées dès les années 30 par l'ethnologue Marcel Griaule. Travail de la première moitié de XXème siècle H : 70 cm (avec socle), 53 cm (hors socle) ; L : 52 cm 
    Beautifully and highly decorative carved old Dogon granary door from the first half of the 20th century. It is made of two carved and pieced together wood panels. Its rich carving shows on top a group of dancers wearing the traditional Dogon ceremonial mask, in the middle a set of standing figures and at the bottom three stylized kneeling figures with a domestic animal. It has its lock. This door was used to lock a traditional Dogon granary and protect its content (mainly cereal) from predators. The Dogons are one of the oldest population of Africa and live in the Bandiagara region in the middle of Mali not far from Mopti. They build their villages at the bottom of cliffs where they bury their deads in caves. Their culture and cosmogony is one of the best known and complex in Africa and was extensively studied in the 1930s by French ethnologist and anthropologist Marcel Griaule.
